Meet Me In Magalawa | DIY trip

Remember that scene in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind where Clementine whispered to Joel to meet her in Montauk? Yes, I've been thinking about it for the past weeks while I was planning my quick getaway to Magalawa.

I longed for another moment on the road. I missed the sweeping view of trees, endless concrete roads, those moments where you can drift off into nothingness and just be happy to be away. Being on the road, on a plane or threading across the waters is my kind of escape from the crazy world.

The Cancelled Trip

All my bags are packed and I'm ready to go. Just a few hours until our 4AM departure to Magalawa, the bad news came.

We have to cancel. Imagine my dismay and disappointment. I felt like crying, hitting someone with the tripod and tent I have with me and sulk in the corner.

My spirit crashed and burned.
I guess we all know the feeling of such disappointment? Nakakadepress no?

The rest of the night was spent stress-eating (as always).

Fast forward.

Kapitolyo Food Trip #1: Ramen Cool and Lia's Cake in Season

Last Saturday's Indieket also turned into an impromptu foodtrip.
We're in the vicinity of Kapitolyo, Pasig and I've been targeting the area already for a foodtrip. I thought it's far and the commute is not friendly, but turns out it isn't.

I was on the lookout for Milky and Sunny but I wasn't in the mood for breakfast food, so we ended up in Ramen Cool for a late lunch.

DSC_0012-1

The place looked really nice and cozy. Plus there were only a few people inside when we got there, I sometimes like my quiet and personal time when eating.

DSC_0016-1

This place could pass up as a coffee shop with its interior. And I love the couch type set-up. Well, I always like places that have this homey feeling. And good ambient lighting! :)

DSC_0014-2

Unique fixtures never fails to get my attention.

DSC_0015-3

DSC_0017-4

Their menu was nicely illustrated and kudos for the photos! You don't know how important photos are in menus.
The only thing is that their menu is salvaged by tape to hold it together. So I think they should do something about it. Sturdier material, perhaps?

Very pop and modern japanese illustrations.

Now for the food verdict!

DSC_0024-1
Katsu Curry Rice

This was D's order. He said he liked it. I gave it a taste and I should say that they got their curry good. A bit spicy and the pork serving was generous. (Php 215)

1
Spicy Chicken (Php 185)

I personally liked their Spicy Chicken (I'm really craving for spicy food that day) and their serving is big.

2

DSC_0036-10
Seafood Ramen (Php 205)

Well, it is a Ramen place so trying their ramen is a must. We went for Seafood Ramen (yes, I love my seafood), it was good and again, the serving is good for 2 already. Ingredients-wise, they are really generous with it. Taste-wise, it was good but nothing that makes it stand out.

Verdict: The shark gives RamenCool a rating of 3.5/5 sharkbites.

Next up -- Lia's Cakes in Season!

This place was already on my To-Go list for D-related reasons, well, he likes loves Avocado. Cakes, mochi, shakes, the fruit itself and anything really. And scouting for Avocado treats for him already became a part of my nature. Lia's Cakes is supposed to be hidden from him until his birthday as I initially planned on giving him their Avocado cake on his birthday. But since we're on the area, I might as well take him there. Too early for the surprise, but oh well.

DSC_0044-14
Specialty of Lia's Cakes -- their Avocado Cake! (sorry I forgot the price)

D's reaction upon tasting this was priceless. :)
Oh, the joys you get when you know someone will appreciate what you did.
This is my advance Happy Birthday to you! Haha!

I'm in good terms with avocados except when we used them for our thesis on college that I grew weary on them. Haha. I've lost my liking for avocado (imagine extracting oil from kilos and kilos of Avocado, I can even smell it in my sleep back then) but this cake might be the saving grace. What can I say, I actually liked it. :D

DSC_0041-13
Chocolate Avocado Cake (Php 80)

Hm. What can I say about this one. I prefer the plain Avocado cake over this one. The chocolate-avocado has that roasted taste. Idk, maybe it's just me.

DSC_0039-12
Banana Caramel Cake (Php 50)

It's cheap and it tastes good, what more can you ask for? I love that there are actual bananas on it and it's not so sweet. I love my desserts but those treats that are heave-laden with sugar sets me off. Nakakaumay.
But Lia's cakes -- superb!

I can't wait to go back to Kapitolyo to try the other restos!

ETA:
How to get there by commute: Take the MRT and alight on Boni Station. There is a tricycle terminal beside Robinson's Pioneer and from there, take a trike and just say you're heading to (say the street) in Kapitolyo. :)
You can walk from Ramen Cool to Lia's Cakes, just go straight to East Capitol Drive (if I remember it right).

June Ended and July I'm Jaded.

That's a lot of J's.

I'm really happy to write and post photos here again. I've been too busy writing for WhenInManila so I've decided to spend some time here on my blog tonight and update you guys (anyone reading this?) with my life happenings.

June sort of ended in a magical, marvelous, joyful way but it ended so soon as I got home. Roaming service sucks -- and expensive! BELIEVE ME. And because of it, I will be cancelling my SG trip on September so that I can pay my bills. Globe sucks. And yes, I am mentioning names because I am greatly in aghast.

But oh well. I just hope they cooperate with me well as to my request for their explanation on it before I actually settle my payment. Or else.. hell will break loose. LOL.

So there, bye bye Singapore September. *tears* Hopefully, I will see you next year.

Moving on, I am here to tell you about what I've been up to and not just to rant about my absurdly expensive Globe bill. BV, go away.

Can you guys guess where I've been to lately? :D
If you are following me on twitter or on instagram, then you are most likely updated on my whereabouts.

HELLO HONGKONG!
4 Days, 3 Nights in Hongkong. Tired ourselves out by visiting Ocean Park, Disneyland and Macau.
Casualties were my sneakers for 3 years, my wallet and my feet.
But I had the most magical moments. And that's priceless. :)

I guess the kid in me just had the best moment of her life.

And with that, I bid goodbye to Hongkong.
It was short but splendid and I hope to be back soon someday, with the whole family and D.

Now, off to sleep.

PS. Will you leave me comments? I want to know if you guys are still dandy out there. :)

Ilocos Chronicles: Vigan Night Lights

And so they say that taking a stroll in Paris at night is romantic. Well, our very own Vigan has its own charm. I was not able to experience Calle Crisologo at daytime but nighttime in Vigan was truly captivating and romantic.

vigan15

It was past 10PM but there are still few tourists strolling down Calle Crisologo. The only challenge is taking good pictures without the lights being to harsh on your subject/s.

vigan5

Cafe Leona was still open when we got there, I think they close at around 11PM. I wanted to dine there but unfortunately, we were gripping tight to our budget since it was only our first day (so maybe next time).
There are also some souvenir shops still open, so I got my siblings and mother some pasalubong. Can't go back home without them. Bringing back pasalubong to the household is like a pa-goodshot technique so they will be more lenient with your sudden/spontaneous trips. Haha! It works for me!

vigan4

A long stretch of cobblestone street. You will feel a little time-warped once you're in Calle Crisologo. Take a pick, be Crisostomo Ibarra or Maria Clara for the night. Imagine this night stroll with your kasintahan, it wouldn't be any sweeter.

Antique furniture adorned the street.

Well, we tried to do a good shoot, but it turned out more candid. The thing is, we always get mistaken as siblings. And I can't take posing for the camera seriously, I'm better off behind it.

The problem is, I'm not too girly to begin with thus explaining the photos. He calls me "maton" sometimes btw. This what happens when you grow up as one of the boys. :P But I'm fine with that.

Damage: 80php tricycle fare to Calle Crisologo and back to Casa Teofila

Ilocos Chronicles: Sandboarding at La Paz Sand Dunes

Still on our first day in Ilocos and we are heading to Laoag to go SANDBOARDING!!
After having our Baluarte adventure, we rode an ordinary bus heading to Laoag (Fare: Php120/person), you can wait in the highway for a bus or go to bus terminals like Partas. We went for the former. Also because I prefer the non-aircon bus ride. One can enjoy the road scenery better this way. :)

laoag1

laoag2

There's a municipality in Ilocos that's abundant in ONIONS!! I forgot the name tho. But it was fun looking at the onion-laden huts along the road.

laoag3

Touchdown Laoag at past 4PM.

Vigan to Laoag takes around 2 hours of travel time. We decided to have our Sandboarding at 5PM as Kuya Glenn Guerrero suggested so that we can also see the sunset and it won't be too hot. I really suggest doing this activity in the afternoon if your itinerary permits. :)

sand1

Kuya Glenn fetched us in McDonald's Laoag and we headed our way to La Paz Sand Dunes on a 4x4! Awesome, right? It was absurdly windy when we went there though because of the low pressure area, saaaaaand everywhere!

sand2

Wear comfortable clothes when you go sandboarding, go for shorts and light materials. You don't want to be a sandbag afterwards, right? You can wear shoes, sandals or slippers but you would probably just remove them when you're on the boards already. Also bring a change of clothes, or at least an extra shirt unlike us who totally forgot that part hence we traveled back to Vigan with sand bits. Also DON'T FORGET to bring a scarf or something close, it will have it's purpose.

Kuya Glenn will give you a short ride around the dunes, bumpy trails, up and down the steep hills. It can be really fun or a little scary (feeling ko kasi baka tumaob yung 4x4). That alone will already give you the adrenaline surge.

And then he asked us where we want to start, the easy hill or the steeper hill. I would be out of my mind if I chose the latter. But when showed us the easy hill, all I said was "Wow, di pa to yung steep?" Looking  down from the top can make you think twice, but as I always say, "Andun ka na, ituloy mo na." Haha!

You can do it sitting down, standing and Kuya Glenn even said others do it face first (if you don't mind eating sand). We first tried it sitting, starting easy! And it wasn't so easy at all, it requires good balance, something of which I don't have. Hence, me redirecting myself towards the grass instead of heading downhill. LOL!

sand8

A few more tries! The key to it is balance and just have fun!

You can avail Sand Boarding from Kuya Glenn for Php2500 for an hour which is good for 4 persons already. Pictures included too! :D And do say Hi from me if you decided to have Kuya Glenn as your sandboarding guide. :)

sand7

When in doubt, just go down in the sand! Haha! The sand is fine, so no problem if you decide to roll on it (or in my case, swim on it), unless you do this activity under the blazing sun, then laying down on the sand might be a problem.

sand6

If you think balancing on the board is hard, think again. It was actually the climb back up the hill that was harder. I ran out of breath from it and felt like almost passing out (must be from the exhaustion from all the activities we did in a day), so I recommend that you bring water and prepare your stamina for this part. In the end, it will all be worth it. :D

sand4

Riding the board like a boss!

And you might be wondering why I look like some villain in a Panday movie (yes, some of the old Panday desert scenes were filmed here), it was because I had to keep a scarf covered on my face especially my mouth. With the rate of the wind during our visit there, you will surely eat sand. It can go in your ear lobes, nose, eyelids and anywhere it can reach. You won't know when it will be too windy in La Paz, so have your scarves ready!

sand5

Of course, we won't pass up the chance of doing it standing up. D managed to do it on his second try. I, the no-sense-of-balance being I am, failed on my first attempt. But I was more than determined to do it. FOCUS!!

sand3
SAND HOARDING - new sport courtesy of me.

I DID IT!! I actually did it until I got too excited and lost my concentration. Thus what was documented was my solid face plant in the sand. It was actually... fun. Haha! It wasn't really that bad! If I hadn't got myself shoved to the sand, it would've been less fun (I think).

sand10

sand9
Princes and Princess of Persia. Nagffeeling. LOL.

We didn't wait for the the sunset to finish, the wind was too violent already that it pricks when sand slams your skin. And we feared that we might not be able to get a bus back to Vigan so it was time to leave.

Sand Boarding, one thing checked on my Bucket list. ✔

This is definitely one of the many things that I want to do again. Until my return, La Paz! I'll make sure to have my sense of balance fixed by that time. :))
