What are disappearing because of climate change? How do we adapt?

How can we train ourselves to think deeper about the future of the planet?

This summer, The Mind Museum is set to launch a special exhibition that will make you think about your relationship with the planet. This is the first solo exhibition by artist and scientist, Catherine Sarah Young in close collaboration with The Mind Museum’s Curator, Maria Isabel Garcia. The exhibition tackles specific questions: What are disappearing because of climate change? How do we adapt? How can we train ourselves to think deeper about the future of the planet?

The Apocalypse Project: Imagined Futures is a speculative design exhibition that explores possible lifestyles as climate change continues to affect the planet. The word 'apocalypse' usually has end-of-the-world connotations. However, its Greek origin means "disclosure" or "lifting of the veil." More than creative engagement, The Apocalypse Project: Imagined Futures intends to empower the public to embrace climate change as a personal challenge.

It is comprised of 5 exhibit stations that bring out emotional connections with what we are losing and “gaining” in the context of climate change. Exploration through the senses such as smell & sound, clothing, and habitat can be investigated through objects, interactive exhibits, and participatory art.

1) T.E.M.P.S. (The Ephemeral Marvels Perfume Store) presents: The Smell Bar of Vanishing Scents – a hypothetical perfumery set in the future that makes scents out of things that are disappearing as we know it in the present. Get to smell the ozonic freshness of coasts, which may be swallowed up due to rising sea levels!

 2) Climate Change Couture: Volume 2, Manila - highlights potential climate scenarios through fashion design. Check out how the Barong Tagalog can adapt to the fickle city weather! Or how about a terno that can double as a floatation device during floods?

 3) The Fadelist: Tracks of Endangered Sounds – showcases sounds that are disappearing because of climate change. Listen to the sounds of a koala bear… being drowned by the sounds of carbon-emitting vehicles.

 4) The Climatoscope: Futurescapes of Planet Earth – brings back the iconic Viewmaster from decades ago and allows guests to play with the nostalgic toy, this time with environmental images about Planet Earth.

 5) The Planetary Poetry Board - is an interactive activity where guests are invited to create their own spontaneous poem. Roll the dice, land on the prompt, and write the first thing that comes to mind. So, what would you like to tell a blade of grass?

Guests can also choose to participate in a Mission Apocalypse Interactive Game set out on a mission to answer questions on climate change throughout the museum’s exhibits. Complete all tasks for a chance to win an Apocalypse Badge as a Commander of the apocalypse, empowering the participant to fight climate change for the future of the planet. First 500 “Commanders” get a special cloth badge!

Opening on April 25, 2014, The Apocalypse Project: Imagined Futures, is a must-see exhibition for kids whose future is at stake; for engineers who need to reinvent our tools for such a change; for designers to help adjust our lifestyles with ways and means to cope; and for all those who care about our future and are willing to imagine that with us.

The Apocalypse Project was first launched by Catherine Sarah Young in 2013 at ArtScience Museum in Marina Bay Sands, Singapore. As an artist, scientist, designer, explorer, and writer, Catherine’s work combines the arts and the sciences to create stories, objects, and experiences that facilitate wonder and human connection.
